The
Georgia Composite Medical Board oversees medical practitioners in the State of
Georgia by reviewing license requests, controlling regulation, and issuing
disciplinary actions.
The
medical practitioners the Georgia Composite Medical Board oversees are:
- Physicians
- Resident physicians
- Respiratory care therapists
- Perfusionists
- Physician assistants
- Prosthetists
- Orthotists
- Auricular detoxification specialists
- Acupuncturists
The mission of the Georgia Composite Medical Board is to enforce compliance
with the Georgia Medical Practice Act, and any other medical-related laws which
govern Georgia's licensed medical professionals' actions. Through their
enforcement of Georgia law, the Board is able to protect Georgia's citizens'
health.
The Board views all requests for medical practice licenses from the above
mentioned medical professionals, and then The Georgia Composite Medical Board
issues the licenses to the medical professionals so they can practice in the
State of Georgia. As of April 2010, there were 40,457 Georgia Composite Medical
Board licensed medical professionals in the State of Georgia.
The Board is also responsible for making sure its licensed medical
professionals are in compliance with Georgia law. They do this in part by
investigating complaints made by government agencies, health care
practitioners, hospitals, consumers and patients against medical professionals.
The Board also assesses malpractice settlements.
After investigating and reviewing the complaints, The Board decides to either
close the case or discipline the licensed practitioner who is under review for
his or her actions. The Board can impose a warning, a probationary period, a
fine, a revocation of the practitioner's license, or all or any of these
actions.
However, The Board does have help. The Board is assisted by an Executive
Director, LaSharn Hughes, who manages the resources and activities of The
Georgia Composite Medical Board. Under the Executive director are 21 staff
positions who aid in legal matters, investigations, operations, finances,
enforcement, licensure, and customer support.
