Physicians | Physician's Assistants | Respiratory Care Professionals | Acupuncturists and Auricular Detoxification Specialists

All applicants for reapplication for any medical license or health care certificate are required to obtain continuing education requirements in order to be approved for renewal of their medical license or health care certificate. The requirement varies by license or certificate type.  All persons seeking renewal of their medical license or health care certificate are encouraged to read the rules and laws of the Composite State Board of Medical Examiners on Continuing Education Requirements for their specific profession. The information posted on this web site is intended only as a "quick reference" tool and any question regarding whether or not a CE or CME is appropriate for your profession should be addressed in writing so that your concern may be addressed by the appropriate advisory committee or the full Board. PHYSICIANS: (Rule 360-15-.01) Continuing Education Requirements:

(1) Physicians licensed to practice medicine pursuant to O.C.G.A. § 43-34-26 shall complete Board approved continuing medical education of not less than 40 hours biennially, with the following exceptions:

· Physicians enrolled in full time graduate medical education programs (residencies and fellowships) which are accredited by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education or the American Osteopathic Association;

· Physicians who are initially licensed by the Composite State Board of Medical Examiners and who have not renewed their licenses for the first time;

· Physicians whose licenses are not active, such as those who are Inactive or Revoked.

· Physicians who are suspended or in some other way disciplined by the Board must meet the requirements unless otherwise stipulated by Board Order;

· Physicians specifically exempted from this requirement by Board Order due to cases of hardship, disability, illness, service in the United States Congress, military or other circumstances or other circumstances as the Board deems appropriate if supported by adequate documentation acceptable to the Board;

(2) The Board accepts the following as meeting its requirements for Board approval:

· American Medical Association Category One credit;

· American Osteopathic Association Category One credit;

· American Academy of Family Physicians Prescribed credit;

· American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Cognates, Category One credit;

· American College of Emergency Physicians Category One credit.

It is the responsibility of the licensee to verify approval with the source of the program, not with the Composite State Board of Medical Examiners, and the licensee should verify this approval BEFORE taking the course of study.

(3) Physicians who must meet the requirements of this Chapter must document the completion of Board approved continuing (medical) education of not less than 40 hours from January 1st of even numbered years and ending December 31st of odd numbered years. This time period constitutes the biennial renewal cycle pursuant to Rule: 360-2-.07.

(4) Each licensed physician who must meet these requirements must maintain records of attendance and supporting documents for continuing (medical) education for a period of not less than five (5) years from the date of attendance. At a minimum, the following must be kept:

· Name of provider;

· Name of program attended;

· Hours/Continuing (Medical) Education Units completed;

· Date of completion;

· Evidence of American Medical Association Category One credit or American Osteopathic Association Category One credit

PHYSICIAN'S ASSISTANTS: (Rule 360-5-.10) Continuing (Medical) Education Requirements:

(1) Physician's Assistants certified to practice pursuant to O.C.G.A. § 43-34-101 shall complete Board approved continuing (medical) education of not less than (40) hours biennially. Physician's Assistants who are authorized to carry out prescription drug orders shall be required as a part of the number of hours of continuing medical education required herein, to complete a minimum of (3) hours in practice-specific pharmaceuticals in which the Physician's Assistant has prescription order privileges. This rule shall not apply to the following persons:

· Physician's assistants who are initially certified by the Board and who have not renewed their certification for the first time;

· Physician's assistants whose certifications are not active, such as those who are inactive or revoked. Physician's assistants who are suspended or in some way disciplined by the Board must meet the requirement unless otherwise stipulated by Board order;

· Physician's assistants specifically exempted from this requirement by Board Order due to cases of hardship, disability, illness, service in the United States Congress, military service or other circumstances as the Board deems appropriate if supported by adequate documentation acceptable to the Board.

(2) The Board accepts the American Medical Association Category One, the American Osteopathic Association Category One, American Academy of Anesthesiologist's Assistants Category One, and the American Academy of Physician's Assistants Category One credit as meeting its requirement for Board approval.

It is the responsibility of the physician's assistant to verify approval with the source of the program, not with the Board, and the physician's assistant should verify approval before taking the course.

(3) Physician's assistants who must meet the requirement of this Chapter must document the completion of Board approved continuing education of not less than 40 hours from January 1 of odd numbered years and ending December 31 of even numbered years. This time period constitutes the biennial renewal cycle pursuant to Rule 360-5-.06(1).

(4) Each certified physician's assistant who must meet these requirements must maintain records of attendance and supporting documents for continuing education for a period of 5 years from the date of attendance. At a minimum, the following must be kept:

· Name of Provider;

· Date of completion;

· Evidence of American Medical Association Category One credit;

· American Osteopathic Association Category One credit;

· American Academy of Physician's Assistants Category One credit; or

· American Academy of Anesthesiologist's Assistants Category One credit.

RESPIRATORY CARE PROFESSIONALS: (Rule 360-13-.07) Continuing Education Requirements:

(1) On or before expiration date for the biennial renewal of (Respiratory Care Professional) certificates issued pursuant to this Chapter, all (RCP) certificate holders must furnish satisfactory evidence to the Board of completion of Board approved continuing education requirements.

(2) Prior to renewing a certificate pursuant to this Chapter each certificate holder must complete 30 hours, or 3 continuing education units of approved continuing education for the period of the previous 2-year renewal cycle. One continuing education unit shall be equal to 10 contact hours of instruction.

· Certificate holders who are initially certified within the 2-year biennial renewal period are exempted from this requirement; however, they must comply with the continuing education requirements for the first full renewal period following the initial certification period.

(3) Each certificate holder who is required to meet continuing education requirements must report compliance with these requirements on a form approved by the Board, and shall submit any required supporting documentation required by the Board, at the time of the biennial certificate renewal.

(4) To meet the continuing education requirements, a continuing education program must be approved by the Respiratory Care Advisory Committee and the Board.  The following are eligibility criteria for approval by the Board:

· approval by the American Association for Respiratory Care or its successor organization;

· approval by the Georgia Society for Respiratory Therapy or its successor organization;

· approval by a hospital medical education program which meets the requirements in criteria established by the Board;

· approval by other organizations or institutions including public and private colleges and universities which meet the requirements in criteria established by the Board;

· passing an official credentialing and/or official self-evaluation examination offered by the National Board for Respiratory Care may be considered for approval for 2 continuing education units for a 2 year period.

(5) The following criteria are used by the Board to evaluate a program for approval:

(a) The content of the course/program shall be directly relevant to clinical practice of respiratory care.

(b) The content of the course/program shall be developed under the direction of, or in consultation with a respiratory care practitioner certified by the Board and/or a licensed physician approved by the Board.

(c) The faculty teaching the course must demonstrate that they are knowledgeable in the subject matter as verified by either (1) degree from an accredited college or university and verifiable experience in respiratory therapy, or (2) teaching in clinical experience in the field of Respiratory Therapy.

(d) Education objectives shall be well documented, behavioral, measurable, feasible, and consistent with the overall purpose of the course/program.

(e) Those offering the course shall maintain a record of attendance and evaluation results of participants for a period of at least 4 years.

(f) Those teaching the course must submit sufficient documentation to the Board concerning teaching methods, learning activities, time schedule, and evaluation methods.

(6) Each certified respiratory care professional that must meet these requirements must maintain records of attendance and supporting documents for continuing education for a period of 5 years from the date of attendance. At a minimum, the following must be kept:

· Name of Provider;

· Name of program;

· Date of completion;

· Hours/Continuing Education Units completed;

· Evidence of approval by the A.A.R.C., the G.S.R.T., or other hospital medical education program or other Board approved program.

ACUPUNCTURISTS AND AURICULAR DETOXIFICATION SPECIALISTS: Rules regarding the continuing education requirements for these license types are not yet promulgated. Please check with the Composite State Board of Medical Examiners for any update of rules that may apply to the continuing education requirements for Acupuncturists and Auricular Detoxification Specialists.
