The Georgia Lottery

The Georgia Lottery provides the citizens of Georgia with entertaining games of chance in order to enhance educational funding in the state of Georgia. It was created in 1992 by the Lottery for Education Act, which also created the Georgia Lottery Corporation to oversee the operations of the lottery. The President and CEO of the Georgia Lottery Corporation is currently Margaret DeFrancisco. The Georgia Lottery Corporation also has a board of directors that consists of five members and is currently chaired by James Braswell.

In the eighteen years that the Georgia Lottery has existed, it has generated over $35 billion in sales and deposited more than $11.4 billion into the State Treasury's Lottery for Education account. This money has been used to help more than 1 million four-olds enroll in Pre-Kindergarten classes and to fund HOPE Scholarships for 1.2 million college students.

The Georgia Lottery Corporation employs around 250 people statewide and has nine district offices. The offices are located in Augusta, Columbus, Dalton, Duluth, Macon, Savannah and Tifton, and two are located in Atlanta. Prizes won from the lottery can be claimed at any of these locations.

Games Offered

The Georgia Lottery offers three types of games: draw games, sit and win games, and instant games. Each game works as follows:

  • Draw Games - These games require the player to choose several numbers from a defined range on a payslip and then turn the payslip into a Lottery retailer. The winning numbers for each game are drawn on a certain date and the player wins if he has chosen enough numbers correctly. The draw games currently offered are Mega Millions, Powerball, Win for Life, Fantasy 5, Cash 4, and Cash 3.
  • Sit and Win Games - To play a sit and win game, players must go to a Lottery retailer when a game is currently in session. While there, they can fill out a form with their chosen numbers, how many games they wish to play, and how much they want to wager on each game. The winning numbers for each game are chosen every few minutes and displayed on a monitor at the Lottery retailer. Players must match enough of the winning numbers in order to win. The Georgia Lottery currently has four sit and win games: Keno!, Deal or No Deal, Lucky Dough, and Rolling Jackpot.
  • Instant Games - Instant games come in the form of a scratch off card that has predetermined odds for winning. Players buy a ticket and scratch off designated boxes on the ticket to determine whether or not the ticket they bought is a winner. On average, the Georgia Lottery offers 40 to 45 different instant games at a time.
