Georgia State Bar - Special Committees

The State Bar of Georgia has over 20 special committees that are dedicating to improving judicial and legislative matters in the state.

Annual Meeting
This committee coordinates with the President to plan and conduct the State Bar of Georgia's annual meeting.

Bar Center
This committee is in charge of moving the State Bar of Georgia's headquarters to a new office location.

Board of Governors Representation
This committee is in charge of studying reapportionment and then making a recommendation to the Board of Governors.

A Business Commitment
This committee oversees bringing private business attorneys into community economic development cases, mostly on a pro-bono basis to serve low income businesses and individuals for the betterment of the community's economy.

Child Support/Licensing
This committee is charge with studying the State Bar Rule recommended in January of 1997. Over the next three years, committee members will see if amendments are needed to improve the implementation of the Rule.

Construction Law
This committee will work in conjunction with the Bar Center committee to make sure the Bar's future headquarters at the Federal Reserve Building are being renovated satisfactorily. Additionally, the committee will consider establishing a State Court of Claims and forming a permanent Construction Law Section.

Court Futures
This committee's focus is to plan long-term strategy that will improve the judicial system.

Diversity Program
This committee is to advice the Board of Governors staff, and Executive Committee on how the State Bar of Georgia Diversity Program should be operated within the perimeters of its established rules and policies.

Electronic Filings
This committee is to recommend ways to help Georgia's court system run more efficiently through the use of a standardized electronic filing system, which will be of benefit to all those involved in the court system and will also eliminate delays and costs.

Emerging Issues
This committee identifies any changes in law which may change how Georgia's lawyers practice law or how they represent clients.

Family Courts
This committee is studying whether to establish a separate division of existing courts or a separate court which would exclusively deal with domestic matters.

Government Attorney Involvement
This committee focuses on public service issues.

Guardian Ad Litem Guidelines
This committee establishes appointment and service guidelines for guardian ad litems.

Indigent Defense
This committee coordinates with Indigent Defense to offer equal and adequate representation for indigents who are accused of a crime.

Literacy in Detention Centers
This committee recommends ways to implement literacy programs into youth detention centers. In addition, the committee recommends ways to establish mentoring programs for at-risk juveniles in and out of the justice system.

Multidisciplinary Practice
This committee reports recommendations to the Executive Committee and Board of Governors on multidisciplinary practices.

Pension Plan
This committee is in charge of realizing the dual goals of establishing security and capitalizing on earnings.

Post-Conviction Capital Representation
This committee oversees the post-conviction of defendants in capital cases. They report recommendations to the Board of Governors.
